Stay Safe and have fun
Boxing Day Swims in the UK
There’s something truly magical about a festive dip in the sea — the crisp winter air, the laughter, and the buzz of community spirit. Across the UK, Christmas and Boxing Day swims have become cherished traditions, with brave swimmers plunging into chilly waters to celebrate the season and raise money for charity.
If you’re thinking of joining in this Boxing Day, especially in beautiful Cornwall, safety should be your top priority. Cold water swimming can be exhilarating and good for the soul — but it also comes with risks if you’re not prepared.

Why Organised Events Are the Way to Go
When it comes to festive dips, always choose an organised event. These gatherings are run by experienced local teams who understand the tides, weather conditions, and safety measures needed for a smooth swim. You’ll have lifeguards or safety boats on hand, and plenty of friendly faces to share the fun (and the post-swim hot chocolate!).
Organised events are also a great way to meet like-minded swimmers and be part of a supportive community. Whether you’re an experienced open-water enthusiast or dipping your toes in for the first time, there’s comfort in knowing you’re in safe, knowledgeable company.

Top Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Cold-Water Dip
1. Acclimatise slowly – Don’t dive straight in! Enter the water gradually to let your body adjust to the temperature.
2. Wear the right gear – A swimming cap (or two!) helps retain body heat. Even if some events go “no wetsuits”, neoprene gloves or booties can make a big difference.
3. Don’t swim alone– Always go with a friend or within a group. Keep an eye on each other throughout.
4. Know your limits – You don’t need to stay in long to get the buzz. Even 1–2 minutes in cold water can be plenty.
5. Warm up slowly afterwards – Have warm clothes and a hot drink ready, and avoid jumping into a hot shower immediately after — it can make you feel faint.
