What are the mental health benefits of swimming

Physical activity can have a positive impact on mental health regardless of age or ability. Swimming is a great all round exercise which will make you feel stronger and healthier. It benefits the whole body and its an ideal way to strengthen your muscles. The benefits of swimming goes beyond just the physical benefits it is also hugely beneficial for your mental health. 

1. Stimulates Relaxation and Reduces Stress

Being in the water, whether at the pool or outdoors, can help you relax your body, clear your mind and reduce anxiety. Swimming is said to reduce stress more so than any other sport - it also boosts mood and brain health! When swimming almost all your senses are engaged and you have to focus on regulating your breath while you swim which is helpful both in and out of the pool. 

 

2. Releases Endorphins 

Swimming releases endorphins in the brain. Endorphins are also known as happy hormones as they are the hormones that make you feel good.  Research has also proven that regularly getting these feel-good hormones flowing  has great mental health benefits and helps your body respond better to stress!

3. Encourages Socialisation

Swimming is a great way to build friendships and catch up with friends without the distraction of technology.
