Support World Oceans Day #SaveYourBreath

World Oceans Day is a global celebration of our oceans which takes place on Friday 8th June. This year's theme, much like World Environment Day, is preventing plastic pollution and there are hundreds of events taking place all over the world if you've not already created your own.

In Europe, the Healthy Seas Initiative, Cousteau Divers and Carvico will be taking us on a journey from waste to wear on the island of Santorini in Greece. Diving partners, Ghost Fishing and the Atlantis Dive Center, will be removing discarded fishing gear from the bottom of the Aegean. Pierre-Yves Cousteau will be narrating the diving mission in a LIVE STREAM, from above and beneath the water, answering questions. Ghost fishing nets are the ocean's invisible killer taking up to 600 years to decompose. We’re passionate about the ocean and our mission is to transform debris that’s causing damage into high performance swimwear made with ECONYL® yarn. Our Ecolast™ swimwear begins its life as plastic waste which would otherwise cause damage to our planet, oceans and marine life. Abandoned ghost fishing nets, carpet and industrial waste is rescued from the oceans and saved from landfill, through different initiatives and projects such as The ECONYL® Reclaiming Program, The Healthy Seas initiative, and Net-Works™.

Healthy Seas found during survey dives, lost or discarded fishing nets and long-lines were spotted in popular fishing and diving spots around Santorini. With the help of local fishermen, these will be safely recovered from the areas. The dive is being live streamed for educational purposes. The fishnets collected will first be cleaned, sorted and delivered to Aquafil’s plant in Ljubljana, Slovenia, where they are prepared for the ECONYL® regeneration system.
