Marathon Swims, Swimming's Ultimate Challenge

Every sport has its “Everest”; an iconic distance that is aspirational, challenging and just the right side of achievable. A challenge that you just have to do – “Just because it’s there”. Running has its 26.2 mile marathon, triathlon has its 140 mile Ironman, cycling has its 100 mile events. So, what is the ultimate challenge of swimming?... Introducing Marathon Swims.

The 10k marathon swim debuted at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Team GB enjoyed significant success in the inaugural 10k open water event with 3 medals (silvers from David Davies and Keri-anne Payne and bronze for Cassie Patten). The Marathon Swim has now been redefined as an indoor challenge event – Marathon Swims.

Marathon Swims first event is at the swimming venue of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the London Aquatics Centre, on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on Saturday 11 November 2017. The event includes a variety of challenges ranging from the Marathon 10k, Half Marathon 5k and 1k Challenge swims. You can also enter as part of a team (of 2) in the 10k Team Challenge.

Marathon Swims has a unique format with 1k course laps being completed rather than a straight 200 lengths of a single lane. The format provides opportunities to take a drink, hi-5 your friends on poolside and if you want, maybe even a take selfie mid-challenge. The event will become a series of Marathon Swims hosted in the world’s best and most iconic swimming arenas.
