Today is World Environment Day, the UN's most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. Celebrated in over 100 countries, the theme for this year is Beat Plastic Pollution. It's a call to action for everyone to combat environmental challenges and consider how we can make changes to reduce plastic pollution.
World Environment Day is looking to influence change in four key areas: reducing single use plastics (around 50% of consumer plastics are only used once before being discarded), improve waste management (a third of all plastics escape collection systems), phasing out microplastics and promoting research into alternative solutions.
To get involved in World Environment Day, choose what type of single use plastic you're giving up today. Take a selfie (photo or video) with your reusable alternative. Share it on social media using #BeatPlasticPollution and #WorldEnvironmentDay. Tag 3 friends and challenge them to do the same in the next 24 hours. You can also join A Plastic Planet for #OnePlasticFreeDay.
We've made a pledge to help the environment by transforming ocean waste into swimwear. We're also reducing the plastic in our goggle packaging by 57% from January with the aim to have 100% sustainable packaging (across our product range) by 2020. You can read more about these changes here.
