Babies and children are particularly sensitive to the sun so protecting their skin when the temperatures rise really is essential. Here are our top tips to keeping children protected in the sunshine.
Babies are particularly at risk to the damaging effects of the sun. Up to 6 months, the recommendation is to keep them out of the sun completely. This is because their skin has little melanin which provides some natural protection. If you do need to go outside when it's hot, aim for before 10am or after 4pm, using a buggy with a sun protection cover. Babies should always wear light clothing that covers their legs and arms along with a hat to protect their face and neck. Sunscreen can be used on babies from 6 to 12 months and should be applied to all uncovered areas. It must be applied 30 minutes before going outside and reapplied every two hours or straight after swimming.
The Zoggs Mermaid Flower Sun Top and Deep Sea Sun Protection Top (for babies from 3 months up to 2 years) are ideal for keeping children protected. For toddlers and pre-schoolers, water resistant spray-on sunscreens are a good choice given they rarely sit still. Playing in the shade is ideal especially in the middle of day when the sun is at its hottest. Long-sleeved clothing is a must as it provides protection as well as keeping them cool and comfortable while they play. Hats should also be worn in and out of the pool.
