Never swim alone a) for safety and b) it’s great to share the experience with someone else. Find a friend to train and do events with.

Ensure you can cover the distance in the pool before attempting it outside.

If you decide to wear a wetsuit test it out first – either in a pool, if allowed, or outside. Swimming in a wetsuit is different to without and takes some getting used to.

If doing an open water event or race, spend some time in open water beforehand. You need to experience not being able to see the bottom and not being able to follow lines.

Take it one step at a time. Perhaps start near the back on your first event and don’t worry about people getting in front of you.
